For partners
If he sent you this page.
Then he is trying to tell you something that is hard to say, and he chose to let a calm page say the first part. Here is what he is doing, what it is not, and what it never asks of you.
What he is doing
He is training his own nervous system.
Brahmacharya, as it is practised here, is the discipline of conserving sexual energy and directing it into the rest of a man's life: his attention, his steadiness, his presence with the people he loves. It is trained with breath, posture and grounding, ten to twenty minutes each morning, inside a small group of men who expect him to show up.
Many men come to it because something has been leaking for a long time, often a habit kept private, often with a cost he felt in the relationship before you did. The practice frames that as a mechanism to be trained, not a sin to be confessed, and it holds him to a standard without shaming him. That is the balance we try to keep.
What it is not
- It is not celibacy. For a partnered man, the practice includes intimacy. It separates release from union so that he can be with you and come away fuller, not emptier. If he has explained it as "no sex", he has explained it badly, and the practice does not ask that of either of you.
- It is not a men-against-anyone group.Blaming women, society or the world for a man's condition is against the rules here, and a man who does it is corrected and, if he persists, removed. The responsibility is his. The practice exists to make him more useful to what he loves.
- It is not therapy, and it does not pretend to be.We map patterns; we do not treat wounds. If what surfaces needs a clinician, we say so and refer him.
- It is not a place he cannot leave. He can pause with his seat held, or leave any month. There is no doctrine that makes leaving a failure, and there is a published exit protocol. If anyone ever tells you otherwise, we would like to know.
What it never asks of you
Nothing. You are not asked to practise, to change, to wait, or to hold him to it. The practice is his. If it is working, you will notice in the ordinary places: he is steadier, he is present at the table, his phone is in another room. If you want to understand more, this page and the Questions page are written for you as much as for him.
Three things partners ask
- Is he going to become distant or withhold from me?
- The practice trains the opposite. Distance is what most men arrive with. Presence is the thing being trained, and for a partnered man the relationship is where it is measured.
- Who are these men and what does he tell them about us?
- Five men in a fixed group, who meet weekly with a facilitator. He speaks about his own pattern and his own practice. What is disclosed in the group stays in the group, and the group is not permitted to advise him about you.
- Is there something I should do?
- Only what you would do anyway. If you want to, ask him what his one thing for today was. That is the whole of it.
Thank you for reading this far. He probably knows it was not a small thing to ask.
